5 Steps to Vaccine Success

Are you a little nervous about getting a vaccine?

Try these 5 Proven Steps for Vaccine Success!

  • Plan Ahead – Vaccines are an important part of staying healthy. Think about what strategies you can use to stay calm. If you want someone you trust to be with you, plan on having them attend your appointment.

  • Consider Using a Numbing Cream - Topical anesthetics (example: lidocaine cream, EMLA cream) may help numb the skin and reduce pain from needle sticks. They typically need to be applied to the skin 30 to 60 minutes before the injection. Some can be purchased over the counter from a pharmacy, and some require a prescription. You can discuss with your doctor or pharmacist if this may be right for you.

  • Sit Upright - It’s best to sit up in a comfortable, relaxed and supported position during the vaccination. This can help reduce stress and minimize potential discomfort.

  • Use Distraction – Focus on something fun, engaging and interactive. Playing games or listening to music on a smartphone is an effective way to manage stress and pain and most people have it right in their pocket! Counting, singing, or reading are also good ways to focus on something else. Taking a few deep breaths can also help maintain calm and minimize pain.

  • Plan to Celebrate Your Success - Talk about what went well after your vaccine(s). This helps make it less stressful next time. Plan something fun to celebrate and remember a job well done!
